Health Benefits of Listening to Audiobooks
They take some time to get used to but once you develop an interest, its easy to focus and enjoy while doing other things
Reading has many, many benefits and so do audiobooks. Apart from the content being the same for the consumer, listening to audiobooks has a bonus effect: they can benefit your health.
Listening to Audiobooks helps your physical health
Workouts, walking/running, or cycling are all easier for me when I’m mentally absorbed in a book. I find it more stimulating that just music as my brain is more engaged, keeping me sharp yet distracted from exercise. It’s actually makes the time go by faster and I’m likely to go a little further to finish a chapter.
That’s anecdotal I know, but so far there’s isn’t enough reported research on heart health and audiobooks. Most studies focus on reducing eye strain and improved sleep quality. Both are great, but I think the biggest health benefits for physical health are working out more or longer because it’s more enjoyable.
We’ll have to check again for other studies.
I was scrolling though various web pages and sites recently about audiobooks and found a few comments from real users, not just paid or professional writers.
One audiobook user on Reddit says:
My best success was marrying audiobooks to hiking or workouts. It is the trifecta for health benefits too. While it did take a bit for me to train my brain to stay tuned, I would constantly rewind at first until the story latched me, and if not, change books.
So now I exercise my brain and body, and I get out in nature routinely. And a really good book keeps me out longer, and encourages me to hike more often.
Another user wrote:
I've always been a huge reader, so the jump to audiobooks was actually kinda hard for me at first. It took a little time for me to get used to doing tasks and also listen to a book and retain what I had heard.
What worked for me personally was listening to books I had already read, and thus, I wasn't getting a bunch of completely new info to process.
Other benefits audiobook users mention:
Multitasking: Listen to audiobooks when walking, during gym sessions, or while driving
Portability: Carry as many audiobooks as you want on your mobile phone while traveling. Not possible with physical books
Accessibility/ Availability: No need to go to a bookstore/ library to get your favorite book. Don't go out of stock due to digital format
Ideal for people with reading difficulties: visually impaired and Dyslexia patients
Environment Friendly: Some say they save trees.
No reading slumps or eye strain from reading: although you will need to watch out for playing audio too loudly and risk damaging your ears.
Not just physical health
If you struggle with stress, depression, or anxiety, audiobooks may offer a reprieve from distressing thoughts. Not only can they help to boost your mood in the moment, but they can also help disrupt the negative thinking patterns that may be dragging your mental health down. 1
Additionally, they may enhance cognitive function, promote mindfulness and focus, reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, foster emotional intelligence, and even can improve sleep and relaxation.
This isn’t about which is better, physical books or audiobooks. Both have benefits and differences. This article is about how audiobooks may be beneficial to health.
